How Cold Or Warm is Germany? Unveiling the Climate

How cold or warm is Germany

If you are not from Europe, you might have some questions about Germany’s weather. I know it’s kind of interesting to think that Germany is a cold country with snowfall happening everywhere and every day, right? Yes, I know people are fascinated by this idea. But for your information, I’m letting you know that Germany is not as cold as you might think. I mean, it is a cold country, but not in the way most people imagine. In this blog, I will explain the climate pattern of Germany based on my five years of experience living in Germany as a foreigner. So, no more wasting time, let’s jump in.

Seasons of Germany

Germany has four seasons throughout the year. Though as an Asian, the first two years felt like it’s a cold country throughout the year, living here for several years has changed my perspective. The four seasons are Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. You might relate to this if you are also a foreigner, especially from Asia or other warm climate countries, where it feels very cold during the first few years in Germany. You will feel cold in Spring and Autumn as well because these seasons are similar to Winter in your country, right? I had similar feelings.

Spring

Who doesn’t like spring? If you ask me, I can tell you that I like spring the most, especially in a beautiful country like Germany. It’s delightful everywhere in Germany during the spring season. The flowers make the trees shine, and the trees get new leaves and shine with confidence. This is the perfect season to take a nice trip anywhere in Germany. Normally, I go out in my car and travel alone in this weather. It feels amazing when you go out by yourself in this season. Yes, the days are super nice, but it’s windy and not warm like summer, yet also not so cold. You might want to carry a light jacket with you—that’s enough.

Summer

Personally, I wasn’t a fan of summer at all. Being from a warm-weather country, where it’s hot for almost nine months of the year, I never liked summer. But after coming to Germany, my perception has totally changed. People here enjoy summer so much, and for good reason. The weather is pleasant, not like the intense heat of my home country. I also enjoy summer in Germany because of its windy weather, warm atmosphere, and bearable temperatures, which are perfect for a grill party in an open place.

This is the ideal season if you like outdoor activities, such as having picnics in the park with your family and friends, like I do every summer. We arrange grill parties in the park, and I enjoy bicycle riding throughout the countryside every summer morning, which refreshes my mind. Just imagine riding your bicycle on a windy, sunny morning in the countryside—it feels like heaven on earth, doesn’t it? I don’t miss a day of bicycle riding in the summer. Germans spend summer doing outdoor activities like these, making the most of the beautiful weather.

Autumn

After summer, it’s time for autumn. It starts after August and lasts until November. I know many people don’t know the difference between winter and autumn—that was my problem too. I mixed it up with winter, especially after coming to Germany. But after staying here for a few years, it is crystal clear to me now. In autumn, the temperature starts to cool down from the summer heat. The days become shorter compared to the long summer days. I feel the signal of nature as it makes its transition from summer to winter. To me, this is the biggest beauty of autumn.

Winter

Have you ever experienced a very short day, like 7 or 8 hours of daylight? I guess most of you might not have if you are from Asia or another non-western continent. I’ve experienced and still experience the short winter days every year in Germany. Winter in Germany is very nice to me, though I need to be conscious of the cold weather all the time. I always bundle up very carefully in the winter when I go out for work, to the supermarket, or anywhere else. But still, I like winter the most because this is the dream weather I always wanted to enjoy, especially when I was in my country. I always dreamed of living in a country that is very cold most of the year. So, now I’m enjoying this amazing weather in Germany. Germans also enjoy winter by doing many amazing activities. Many festivals, like Oktoberfest, Christmas, and many others, are celebrated beautifully in the winter season.

In my experience, I can tell that each season in Germany has something special to offer. You can’t specifically describe Germany as a very cold country that is unbearable to live in, nor can you define Germany as a warm country because warm weather stays for more or less two months a year, though it’s not warm for me especially. I feel comfortable in the warm temperature, so it’s totally fine for me. This is the reason I chose to live in Germany and want to stay here until my last breath.

Factors influencing Germany’s climate

I think the reasons behind Germany’s beautiful climate are quite interesting. One significant factor is the location. Germany is situated in the middle of Europe, known as Central Europe. This means it experiences different weather patterns compared to neighboring countries near the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. By the way, I’m not a climate expert, haha! But this is my assumption about Germany’s nice weather.

However, something is happening with Germany’s weather nowadays. I think it’s not only Germany experiencing these climate changes but also other countries worldwide are going through these harsh experiences. The country has been experiencing more heat waves in recent years during the summer, which I think is not a good sign for any country. The opposite is happening in the winter season; snowstorms are occurring too frequently in many areas of Germany in recent winters. I experienced this in February 2021, which is ideally not the winter season, but still, a snowstorm happened across Germany for 12 days in a row. It was insane. I personally love snowfall, but that was a bitter experience for me. You can’t imagine being literally locked up in your house for 12 days. You are unable to go to your job or even to the supermarket. Ok, not going to the job is understandable, but how can you survive without food? It’s just unimaginable. My friend and I went out after two days when the snowfall stopped for two hours to go to the nearest supermarket for shopping. OMG! It was an unimaginable experience for both of us. But that snowfall happened in Germany after 12 years. It’s not the regular scenario in Germany.
